DRIVE LEFT; LOOK RIGHT!

The title is self-explanatory, but if you forget you may be involved in a “prang” or a “smash”—or even worse if you’re a pedestrian.
The cyclone in Northern AU last year has made bananas very “dear”. Yesterday I found bananas at “Woolies” (Woolworth’s grocery) for $13/Kg. I bought just one to share with Gene and it was $3.27. Eat one for us at home! Eggs are pricey as well—$3-5/dozen. Chook growers must be unionized here. We stopped at “Australia’s best pie” café and found they were small meat pot pies—disappointing, as our mouths were watering. Regarding sweets, the Aussies eat “bickies” ((biscuits), which are hard little cookies. All candy except for chocolates are referred to as “lollies”. At birthday parties kids take home a “lolly bag.”
The current exchange is $1 AU = approx 78 cents US. Petrol is $1.30/Liter (US$4.50/gal). Winter is just ending here and so it’s about 20 degrees C. I can remember that 16 C is 61 F and 28 C is 82F. Queensland is still in the state of extreme drought. In spite of last week’s wonderful rains in the city, Brisbane’s catchments received little rain. After the state elections Sat level-four water restrictions are expected, and if the summer is as dry as last year’s, level-five could be introduced by March. This would involve mandatory covering of every swimming pool to prevent evaporation plus a total ban on outside watering. I try to do my bit by hand-washing dishes and going around dirty and sweaty.
Our landlord was commenting that someone was very “daggy”. I looked this up in our Dinkum Dictionary and learned that “dag” refers to a lock of wool on a sheep’s backside which is stiff with excrement. A daggy sheep has not had its daglocks removed. What a picturesque language!
Lastly, here’s an example of a Queenslander house with tin roof, wide verandas, and built on stilts.
